In the early hours of May 27, a violent earthquake hit the area surrounding Yogyakarta, a city in the centre of Java. Although there is still no certain estimate, the victims will surely overweigh 5,000.
The Community of Sant'Egidio has been in Yogyakarta for some years. Here the Community has started two Schools of Peace, a service to the lepers and the street children. Many are also the sponsored children.
The Community entered immediately in action, starting from the early hours soon after the earthquake, to carry aid to those in the hospital and the homeless, especially in the areas of Bantul and Klaten, the most hit
ones.
The Community has opened an
assistance centre in Klaten, where non helps had arrived. The centre, run by volunteers of the Community, helped by some religious of the diocese, distributes nearly
1,000 hot meals a day.
The majority of the people are homeless. 50 tends have been distributed and set up so far. They have arrived from Jakarta, together with blankets, clothes, medicines. Many more are the requests and it is likely that more tends will be sent over the next days.
The community has opened a subscription to support these initiatives.
If those who have sponsored children in the area of Yogyakarta have not yet received information, please contact adozioniadistanza@santegidio.org
